What Are TEM Grids and Why Do They Matter?
TEM grids are small circular metal meshes (3 mm diameter) that physically support specimens inside a transmission electron microscope. The specimen is deposited on a thin support film stretched across the grid bars. Grid material (copper, nickel, gold), mesh size (100–400 mesh), and support film type directly affect image quality, beam stability, and sample compatibility. For cryo-EM, gold grids are preferred — they thermally contract less at cryogenic temperatures, reducing beam-induced motion and improving resolution.
Quantifoil vs UltrAufoil: Which Should You Choose?
Quantifoil substrates are holey carbon films with laser-punched or photolithographically defined holes (R1.2/1.3, R2/1, R2/2 geometries). They are the global standard for cryo-EM and TEM sample prep. UltrAufoil replaces the carbon film with a gold foil — dramatically reducing beam-induced motion, the primary source of image blurring in cryo-EM. UltrAufoil is the preferred choice when targeting resolutions better than 3 Å. For routine screening and standard cryo-EM work, Quantifoil is the cost-effective, reproducible standard.
Cryogenic Storage: Grid Boxes, Dewars & Dry Shippers
Vitrified cryo-EM grids must be maintained at or below −150 °C at all times to prevent devitrification (crystallisation of the amorphous ice), which irreversibly destroys captured biological structures. Cryo-EM grid boxes hold grids safely in LN₂. Cryo dewars store samples long-term. For national or international shipping, IATA-compliant dry shippers (vapour-phase LN₂ vessels) are spill-proof and the approved transport method for vitrified cryo-EM grids. GBS supplies all three categories to Indian research labs.

What are Quantifoil TEM substrates and what are they used for?
Quantifoil TEM substrates are holey carbon films mounted on TEM grids with precisely defined, reproducible hole geometry (R1.2/1.3, R2/1, R2/2 and other patterns). They are the standard sample support substrate for cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) — including single-particle analysis, cryo-electron tomography, and structural biology applications. The holes allow high-resolution imaging of vitrified specimens without background signal from the support film. GBS supplies Quantifoil substrates in India for research institutions and pharma labs.
What is the difference between UltrAufoil and Quantifoil for cryo-EM?

Liquid nitrogen is absorbed into a porous core — only cold vapour is released, making them spill-proof under normal transport conditions. These are the approved method for shipping vitrified cryo-EM grids, frozen cell lines, and other cryogenic specimens by air internationally.
